How it works: The altimeter - AOPA - Aircraft Owners and
https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2019/july/flight-training-magazine/how-it-works-altimeter
Jul 01, 2019 . The altimeter measures the height of an aircraft above a fixed level. The instrument senses this by taking the ambient air pressure from the static port. That air is plumbed through the back of the panel and into the back case of the altimeter. Inside the altimeter is a sealed disc called an aneroid, or bellows.

Altimeter Pressure Settings | SKYbrary Aviation Safety
https://skybrary.aero/articles/altimeter-pressure-settings
QNH QFE QNE Description Aircraft pressure altimeters indicate the elevation of the aircraft above a defined datum. The datum selected depends on the barometric pressure set on the altimeter sub-scale. Sound altimeter setting procedures are an essential tool in ensuring safe separation from the ground and from other aircraft. The SI or metric unit of measurement for …

Your Altimeter Lies - Aviation Safety
https://www.aviationsafetymagazine.com/features/your-altimeter-lies/
May 31, 2011 . Your Altimeter Lies. But its falsehoods are known and predictable, and regular inspections and maintenance can uncover them. Just pay close attention in cold weather. The instruments in our so-called “steam-gauge” panels are marvels of ingenuity. A collection of springs, tubing, gears, bellows, shafts and dials, their basic design predates ...

Introduction to Altimeters | Support
https://www.uavnavigation.com/support/kb/general/general-system-info/introduction-altimeters
INTRODUCTION 1. Altimeters are devices designed to calculate the height of an aircraft above the surface directly below it. This height may be Above Ground Level (AGL) or Above Sea Level (ASL). 2. Different types of altimeter use different technologies to calculate this height, including pressure-density to altitude relationship and the propagation and reflection of

How to Read an Altimeter (Complete Guide) – PilotMall.com
https://www.pilotmall.com/blogs/news/how-to-read-an-altimeter-complete-guide
Oct 17, 2020 . An altimeter consists of a vertical stack of aneroid wafers sealed in a housing. A tube extends from inside the altimeter casing out to the static port of the airplane. This allows the pressure in the altimeter’s sealed chamber to equalize with the pressure outside the aircraft. As the chamber is exposed to the influence of the external ...

US Rollout of 5G Frequencies Delayed Over Aviation Safety
https://mobile.slashdot.org/story/21/11/13/0451252/us-rollout-of-5g-frequencies-delayed-over-aviation-safety-concerns-are-they-warranted
Nov 13, 2021 . C band weather radars are in the same band as the radio altimeters and potentially as close in frequency as the 5G band. Instead of a 100W or so of effective radiated power, the altimeter needs to protect itself against 500Kw or more ERP. Short pulses but still. I have seen a couple of radars that operate right in the radio altimeter band.

https://yro.slashdot.org/story/21/11/07/1959246/americas-faa-issues-warning-over-concerns-5g-might-interfere-with-aviation-altimeters
Nov 07, 2021 . Those signals will be in the 3.7 to 3.98 GHz part of the so-called C-Band, which is apparently the sweet spot for carrying the data-heavy 5G signals. Radar altimeters operate in the 4.2-4.4 GHz frequency range (their sweet spot) and the fear is that the nearby powerful cell signals will cause interference for the avionics.
