Desmosome - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desmosome
A desmosome ( / ˈdɛzməˌsoʊm /; [1] [2] "binding body" ), also known as a macula adherens (plural: maculae adherentes) ( Latin for adhering spot ), is a cell structure specialized for cell-to- cell adhesion. A type of junctional complex, they are localized spot-like adhesions randomly arranged on the lateral sides of plasma membranes.

Desmosomes are are constructed from distinct, cadherin- and plaque-associated complexes that form in the cytoplasm and are delivered to regions of cell-cell contact, where final assembly occurs. The calcium sensitive nature of desmosomal adhesion has served as tool to manipulate desmosome formation.

Animal cells may also contain junctions called desmosomes, which act like spot welds between adjacent epithelial cells. A desmosome involves a complex of proteins. Some of these proteins extend across the membrane, while others anchor the junction within the cell.

Dec 30, 2022 · Desmosomes are necessary for the structural integrity of epithelial layers, and are the most common cell-cell junction in such tissues. The primary structural characteristic of the hemidesmosome, the dense plaque reinforcing the intracellular side of the adhesion, is also found in desmosomes, although it is composed of different proteins.

Jul 26, 2011 · Desmosomes are specialized adhesive protein complexes that localize to intercellular junctions and are responsible for maintaining the mechanical integrity of tissues. The term ‘desmosome’ was coined by Josef Schaffer in 1920 and has its origins in the Greek words for bond (desmo) and body (soma).
